SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art presents Southern Soul and Song Series Rhonda Vincent and the Rage with Special Guest Nu-Blu
DESCRIPTION:Rhonda Vincent and the Rage \nA firecracker of talent that powers one of the hottest shows in any genre of music! \nWorld Class Musicians\, and an Award Winning Voice seamlessly set the stage for a breath-taking\, one-of-a-kind\, must-see performance; that reaches beyond the boundaries of bluegrass music! \nWritten words can give you but a glimpse of the artist known as The Queen of Bluegrass\, as deemed by the Wall Street Journal. But it’s only when you see this artist\, that you can feel the energy and experience the excitement of her music\, to truly know why she and her amazing band are the “Most Award Winning Band in Bluegrass Music History\, with over 100 awards!” \nBreaking a stereotypical image\, Rhonda Vincent takes the stage in designer gowns\, stiletto heels\, in a take-charge manner\, far from the type set that Hollywood has portrayed as the image of acoustic music. \n“We’re changing the landscape of our music in many aspects; to show we are sophisticated\, educated\, and hold a deep respect for the tradition of our music\, keeping the roots embedded within the perimeters of our songs\, to create a balance of tradition mixed with a contemporary flare\, and present our own unique brand of music\,” Rhonda explains. \n“We want our listeners to hear with their hearts\,” says Rhonda. “Music is a business\, but I hope we don’t let it show that much\,” she continues\, “The business part is a necessity; but most of all it’s the love of the music\, that keeps us doing what we do!” \nRhonda Vincent makes having a successful career look easy. Behind the scenes\, she’s a savvy businesswoman with a tireless work ethic. At center stage\, she makes a magical transformation to wow her audiences\, with a fresh cover girl face\, and complimentary curves; all while showing off her chops as the genre’s finest vocalist\, and playing break-neck riffs on the mandolin. \nThe Voice of Rhonda Vincent is the centerpiece\, surrounded by the rhythms of each instrument; featuring the individual styles of the world class musicians that collectively make up The Rage. Their talent is unmatched. Each and every member can sing every part\, and play every instrument. Their depth of skill sets the stage for the highest level of professionalism in every performance. \nReaching beyond the boundaries of bluegrass music…… \nRhonda Vincent & The Rage are one of the HOTTEST TICKETS in any genre of music! \n  \nNu-Blu \nThe band got their start back in September of 2003\, the end result of several of Carolyn’s and Daniel’s previous projects. From the beginning\, they’ve embodied the American working band\, pushing through challenges that would bring most of us to our knees. Just a few years after their formation\, their original record label folded\, and Carolyn suffered a stroke that left her unable to speak\, let alone sing. But barreling past those early trials toughened them\, and the muscle and callouses that came with them have led Nu-Blu to ever-new heights\, like their single “Jesus and Jones\,” which had a run on the radio charts as part of their last release\, All The Way. \nTheir constant traveling has also changed the way they make music.  Several tracks on Vagabonds found their way to the band almost on their own. “We were playing this show and we just kinda decided we’d do ‘Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.’” explains Carolyn. “We hadn’t rehearsed it; we hadn’t even played it together before. But we pulled it off that night\, and the audience loved it.” That growing relationship with their audience is what fuels the band both creatively and emotionally; making the thousands of miles they’ve traveled an honor instead of a chore. “If anything\, I feel like the road has made us a \nsunnier bunch. In past albums\, we’ve tended to gravitate towards the songs that make you cry\,” says Carolyn\, “but on this one\, there are a number of just happy\, happy songs.” Armed with a growing sense of joy and a love of music that only deepens\, Nu-Blu will soon be taking Vagabonds through big and small towns\, over highways and backroads\, to listeners everywhere\, sharing their unique sound\, a disregard for the limits of genre\, and a set of stories that will make their way straight to your heart. \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art presents Southern Soul and Song Series Balsam Range and The Cleverlys
DESCRIPTION:Balsam Range \nThe 2018 International Bluegrass Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year\, Balsam Range\, has become one of the genre’s most award-winning acts. Since forming in 2007\, the group has garnered 13 IBMA awards on the heels of 9 critically-acclaimed albums. Balsam Range has left audiences spellbound while headlining major festivals from coast-to-coast\, selling out venues across the nation and in multiple appearances at the Grand Ole Opry. The band’s latest album\, Aeonic\, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Albums Chart\, and features the #1 radio song\, “The Girl Who Invented The Wheel.” Prior to the release of Aeonic\, the band collaborated with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble to record 2 albums\, the second of which\, Mountain Overture\, debuted on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart at #5 and the Classical Crossover Chart at #6. Their previous outing\, Mountain Voodoo\, debuted at #4 on the Billboard Bluegrass Albums Chart and remained on that chart for 45 weeks. Three singles from that album reached #1 on the Bluegrass Today Chart\, including “Blue Collar Dreams\,” which spent three consecutive months at the top. Mountain Voodoo also was named IBMA Album of the Year in 2017. In addition to winning Entertainer of the Year in 2018\, Balsam Range vocalist Buddy Melton won IBMA’s Male Vocalist of the Year for the second time and bass player Tim Surrett won IBMA’s Bass Player of the Year for the second time. \n  \nThe Cleverlys \nThe Cleverlys are a one-of-a-kind comedy/music blend coming from the remote part of the Ozark Mountains\, near Cane Spur\, Arkansas. \nDigger Cleverly\, along with his nephews Ricky Lloyd\, Sock\, DVD and Cub\, make up The Cleverlys. They have traveled the globe\, if the globe only consisted of the United States\, performing at music venues and some of the nation’s largest festivals like Stagecoach\, Telluride\, CMA Music Fest and even the Grand Ole Opry. \nThe New York Times wrote\, “If Earl Scruggs\, Dolly Parton\, and Spinal Tap spawned a litter of puppies\, it would be the Cleverlys.” \nDon’t be fooled by this faux-family band – they are all accomplished musicians putting their unique bluegrass spin on cover songs from any genre. The Cleverlys’ set list includes genius arrangements of tunes like Psy’s “Gangnam Style\,” a medley of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity\,” and Flo Rida’s “Low” that recently went viral on Facebook\, with over 11 million views from a local TV appearance. \nRolling Stone Magazine says Digger’s “out-of-date eyeglasses are as thick as his hillbilly accent\, but whose comic sensibilities are a hilariously off-kilter hybrid of Homer & Jethro and The Office.” \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art presents Southern Soul and Song Series The Suzy Bogguss Holiday Show
DESCRIPTION:During the creative explosion that was country music in the 1990s Suzy Bogguss sold 4 million records with sparkling radio hits like “Outbound Plane”\, “Someday Soon”\, “Letting Go”\, and “Drive South”. But you can’t peg Suzy that easily. In the midst of her country popularity she took time off to make a duets album with the legendary Chet Atkins. In 2003 she made an album of modern swing music with Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel. An album of original music in 2007 landed her at number 4 on the jazz charts. Her folk music roots show through in her frequent appearances on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion\, in the Grammy she earned for her work on Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster\, and in her critically acclaimed album and book project from 2011\, American Folk Songbook. In 2014 she released Lucky\, a collection of songs written by Merle Haggard and interpreted through Suzy’s crystal vocals from the female point of view. Her latest offering\, Aces Redux\, is a re-recording of her platinum selling album Aces produced by Suzy with fresh arrangements and her signature effortless vocals. So yes\, you can call her a country singer if you want\, but really that’s just the beginning. \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art presents Southern Soul and Song Series Blue Highway and The Seldom Scene
DESCRIPTION:Blue Highway \nHighly esteemed bluegrass band Blue Highway has earned a collective 28 IBMA Awards\, 6 SPBGMA Awards\, one Dove Award\, plus three Grammy nominations as a band.  As momentum continues to build for the 25 year strong powerhouse band (2019 is their 25th year touring\, with 4 of the original members)\, Blue Highway is rolling on with a rich legacy\, carried on by three powerhouse songwriters and vocalists in Tim Stafford\, Wayne Taylor\, and Shawn Lane\, whose harmonies soar over the dynamic banjo of Jason Burleson and the tasteful dobro of Gary Hultman. \n\nBlue Highway’s 2016 album “Original Traditional”  was nominated for a 2017 GRAMMY Awardfor Best Bluegrass Album.\nBlue Highway was voted the Favorite Bluegrass Artist of All Timeby the readers of Bluegrass Today in April 2016.\nWayne Taylorwas a 2016 Inductee into the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame\, alongside legends like Patsy Cline\, the Statler Brothers\,  Jimmy Dean\, Mother Maybelle Carter\, and Roy Clark.  \nTim Staffordreceived honors as 2015 SPBGMA Guitar Player of the Year and 2014 and 2017 IBMA Songwriter of the Year.  Shawn Lane was nominated as 2015 IBMA Songwriter of the Year\, while past member Justin Moses was named IBMA’s Dobro Player of the year in 2017.\nBlue Highway charted the Most Radio Airplay of any Bluegrass Artistin 2014\, per the 2014 Bluegrass Radio Airplay Chart\, storming national airplay charts with their heralded album The Game.\nThe Game topped multiple charts at #1 including reigning at #1 for 7 consecutive months on the Bluegrass Unlimited Album Chart\, and was named the # 1 Bluegrass Album of the Year by critic Daniel Mullins in his end of the year Top 20 Albums of 2014 list in Bluegrass Today.\nThe2012 IBMA Vocal Group of the Year also sent the title track of The Game  to #1 on multiple charts including Bluegrass Todayand Roots Music Report\, as well as holding at #1 for three consecutive months on the national Bluegrass Unlimited Song Chart (Aug-Oct 2014).\n\nBlue Highway has been praised by peers\, fans\, and media alike\, with one of the most powerful descriptions of the Bluegrass super group being shared by Country Standard Time: \n“Wayne Taylor sings with the emotion of a man who escaped the coal mines and ain’t planning on going back. Tim Stafford continues to craft songs with depth .. The instrumentation is perfect. From the get go\, Jason Burleson opens with the unique style that defines Blue Highway banjo..  Shawn Lane exemplifies modern mandolin\, yet nods to the Monroe legacy. Three lead singers.. rich harmony .. songs of forgotten homeless veterans\, fallen heroes\, and heartbroken families. Blue Highway personifies modern acoustic music with respect for tradition. Highly recommended\, highly respected.” \n  \nThe Seldom Scene \nWhat does it take for a bluegrass band to remain popular for more than four decades? For The Seldom Scene\, it’s taken not only talented musicians\, a signature sound\, and a solid repertoire\, but also a sheer sense of fun. On April 22\, the longtime pillars of the bluegrass world returned with the aptly titled ‘Long Time… Seldom Scene\,’ via Smithsonian Folkways. The newly recorded collection features fresh interpretations of 16 oft-requested tunes and is the band’s first studio album since the GRAMMY-nominated album Scenechronized in 2007. It’s a family reunion in all the best ways\, featuring the current — and longest-running — lineup\, joined by founding members Tom Gray and John Starling and guests Chris Eldridge\, Emmylou Harris\, and Rickie Simpkins. \n‘Long Time’ is The Seldom Scene’s first-ever release with Smithsonian Folkways\, and captures the identity and playfulness that have endeared the group to audiences around the world for so long. “Hickory Wind” is a homesick ballad that features the vocals of longtime friend of the Scene\, Emmylou Harris\, who originally recorded the song on her ‘Blue Kentucky Girl’ album in 1980. Fan-favorite “Wait a Minute” is a fresh take of a song originally recorded for 1974’s Old Train album and includes founding member John Starling (vocals) and guests Rickie Simpkins (fiddle) and Chris Eldridge (guitar)\, son of founding member Ben Eldridge (banjo). The album was produced by three-time GRAMMY award-winning Smithsonian Folkways Sound Production Supervisor Pete Reiniger. \nListen to a two-song sneak preview of ‘Long Time… Seldom Scene’ here. \nWatch video of “Through the Bottom of the Glass” here. \nOver 40 years since they began playing together at weekly jam sessions in Ben Eldridge’s Bethesda\, Maryland basement\, The Seldom Scene have become one of the single greatest contributors to the progression of bluegrass while setting a new standard and attracting new audiences to the genre.  Their legendary weekly DC-area residencies included bluegrass versions of country music\, rock\, and even classical pop. The band’s popularity soon forced them to play more than once a week—but they continued to maintain their image as being seldom seen\, and on several of their early album covers were photographed with the stage lights on only their feet\, or with their backs to the camera. The Seldom Scene have performed at the White House many times\, and continue to tour year-round. \nThe Seldom Scene are Lou Reid (mandolin/vocals)\, Dudley Connell (guitar/vocals)\, Ronnie Simpkins (bass/vocals) Fred Travers (dobro/vocals) and Ron Stewart (banjo\, fiddle).  The last founding member\, Ben Eldridge\, retired in July of 2016 at a lovely retrospective of his career staged at the band’s home club\, The Birchmere\, surrounded by family and friends. \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art presents Southern Soul and Song Series Appalachian Road Show and Darrell Scott
DESCRIPTION:Appalachian Road Show \nBarry Abernathy was a founding member of the vocal and instrumental powerhouse band\, Mountain Heart. The group or its members have won or been nominated for multiple Grammys\, ACM\, CMA\, and IBMA Awards. Abernathy is also known for his contributions to both Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and IIIrd Tyme Out. The most unlikely thing about Barry’s story is his having been born with just a thumb and part of an index finger on his left hand. Still\, in addition to his truly great voice\, Abernathy plays a blistering banjo. Because of his hand\, he approaches the fingerboard from the top and does the fretting with his thumb and the end of his single-knuckled index finger. The Georgia-born Abernathy was named Banjo Player of the Year in 1997 by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA). \nDarrell Webb is a Grammy nominated session musician as well as an International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and SPBGMA award winner. The mandolin master with the soaring tenor previously headed up his own eponymous band and prior to that\, worked with some of the top acts in acoustic music\, Lonesome River Band\, J.D. Crowe & The New South\, Rhonda Vincent & The Rage\, was a founding member of the band Wildfire\, and Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper and has appeared on two different albums with Female Country Icon\, Dolly Parton. When you see or hear Darrell Webb perform you’ll know why he’s such a big part of the signature sound of Appalachian Roadshow. \nWith Appalachian Road Show\, Abernathy\, Webb and their talented all-star cast\, including grammy nominated fiddle beast\, Jim VanCleve\, and legendary bass player\, Todd Phillips (Bluegrass Album Band/ David Grisman Quintet/ Tony Rice Unit)  seek to honor the music\, traditions and history of the great Appalachian people and region. Additionally\, the group takes influences from other sources and applies that Appalachian style\, as they’ve done with their top-charting radio single\, a grassy version of the Steve Miller Band’s “Dance\, Dance\, Dance.” Which is currently the number 1 song in The Nation. \nAppalachian Roadshow’s self titled release is also currently the number one album in the nation and is receiving great success from promoters\, radio DJ’s and many fans throughout the US. To see more about Appalachian Roadshow visit: appalachianroadshow.com \n  \nDarrell Scott \n 2017 and 2018 Darrell opened for and performing with the Zac Brown Band\, these days find him roaming his Tennessee wilderness acreage hiking along the small river\, playing music\, or sharing each day with the woman he loves\, also an artist in her own right.   He often leads songwriting workshops to help people tell their own truths with their stories\, and is as busy as always writing\, producing\, performing\, and just plain fully immersing himself at the hips in life. \nIf one really opens their eyes and sees how incomparably varied in surreal depth and breadth the musical territory he is both delving into and setting the high water mark with\,  it leaves the rest in a bewildered wash of gravel road dust and fading taillights.  For good luck finding that two-legged soul who walks around among us who can keep up with him─aint gonna happen. \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art presents Southern Soul and Song Series The Earls of Leicester with Twisted Pine
DESCRIPTION:The Earls of Leicester \nBarry Bales (bass\, vocals) – Shawn Camp (guitar\, lead vocals) – Charlie Cushman (banjo\, guitars) – \nJerry Douglas (Dobro\, vocals) – Johnny Warren (fiddle\, bass vocals) – Jeff White (mandolin\, vocals) \nWhen the Earls of Leicester formed in 2013\, their mission was ambitious but exact: to preserve and promote the legacy of bluegrass legends Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs\, in hopes of reviving the duo’s music for longtime admirers and introducing a new generation to their genre-defining sound. Within a year of releasing their self-titled debut\, the Nashville-based six-piece far surpassed their own expectations\, winning a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album and earning six awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. \n  \nTwisted Pine \nPraised by NPR for their “upbeat\, poppy vibe; energetic\, driving rhythms” and “virtuosic solos\,” Twisted Pine has quickly become one of the most acclaimed young string bands in the Northeast. Steeped in traditional music\, these musicians are also fearless\, tuneful improvisers and passionate lovers of pop. While it’s easy to celebrate each of the band members individually\, Twisted Pine is more than a collection of talented musicians – it’s a unit that grooves together. Their intricate arrangements of swelling\, syncopated rhythm and precise instrumental interplay bring the enveloping sound and hooks of indie pop to an acoustic instrumental setting. That’s why the Boston Globe calls them “a wider version of stringband\, boundary jumpers akin to outfits like Punch Brothers\, Nickel Creek\, and Crooked Still.” \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art Budweiser True Music’s Southern Soul and Song Presents Flatt Lonesome and Donna Ulisse & the Poor Mountain Boys
DESCRIPTION:From the moment of their brilliant self-titled debut in 2013\, it’s been clear that Flatt Lonesome is\, as the title of its third album\, a Runaway Train. Multiple International Bluegrass Music Association\, Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America\, and Dove nominations and awards\, top charting songs\, Billboard charting albums\, countless media appearances (including becoming familiar faces on the legendary Grand Ole Opry stage)\, and a demanding tour schedule\, all combine in testimony to the phenomenon that is Flatt Lonesome. \nIn the wake of three top IBMA honors in 2016\, (Vocal Group\, Song\, and Album of the Year)\, and now\, multiple nominations for the 2017 awards\, (Entertainer of the Year\, Vocal Group of the Year)\, one might wonder\, where do they go from here? \nFlatt Lonesome has emerged from the studio with Silence In These Walls\, a new album that answers the question unequivocally. This band of six brilliant musicians knows exactly where to go … to a well of emotion\, to expressive vocal and instrumental performances\, to increasingly sophisticated songwriting\, and to inventive arrangements. \n  \nCountry music fans remember Donna Ulisse from her days when she was signed to Atlantic Records in the early 1990’s where she released a critically acclaimed album Trouble at The Door with three singles and two videos. She was also a guest on many national television shows including Hee Haw\, Nashville Now\, Crook and Chase and NBC’s Hot Country Nights. \nThese days Donna Ulisse is a key figure in the bluegrass\, folk and acoustic music scene as a singer and songwriter. Her single “It Could Have Been The Mandolin” from the album Hard Cry Moon topped the Bluegrass Unlimited chart at #1 for two months in a row in 2016 and the album topped the Roots Music Report chart at #1. She also won the award for 2016 International Bluegrass Music Association’s Songwriter of the Year. In 2017 she signed with Mountain Home Music Company\, record label of some of bluegrass music’s brightest stars and released her eleventh career album “Breakin’ Easy”\, produced by bluegrass legend Doyle Lawson. \nShe was a featured guest on RFD-TV’s Simply Bluegrass show hosted by Ricky Skaggs which featured the biggest names in the genre. She also did a month long stint in 2016 as host of Bluegrass Ridge\, a video television show on Heartland TV Network which has several of her videos in regular rotation. \nHer past albums have charted prominently in the Bluegrass Unlimited charts\, The Folk DJ National chart\, The Americana Music Charts and Billboard Bluegrass chart. while her 2012 Christmas album All The Way To Bethlehem was called “a masterpiece” by Kyle Cantrell\, host of Bluegrass Junction on SiriusXM Satellite Radio. Edward Morris\, writer for CMT.com dubs her “one of the most commanding voices in bluegrass music.” \nNamed the 2016 IBMA Songwriter of the Year\, she has had her songs recorded by bluegrass artists Claire Lynch\, Darin and Brooke Aldridge\, The Bankesters\, Doyle Lawson\, Larry Stephenson Band and Volume Five to name a few\, as well as a song on the 2014 Grammy winning album Streets of Baltimore by the Del McCoury Band. In 2017 she was the winner of IBMA Song of the Year for the song “I Am A Drifter” recorded by Volume Five.  She authored the book The Songwriter in Me: Snapshots of My Creative Process and is the founder of Lil House Songwriting Workshops offering aspiring songwriters the opportunity to write with her and other pro writers in order to improve their skills. She also keeps a busy touring schedule playing festivals and concert venues with her band. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art Budweiser True Music's Southern Soul and Song Presents Asleep at the Wheel
DESCRIPTION:Asleep at the Wheel landed a gig opening for Alice Cooper and Hot Tuna in Washington\, DC in 1970. At the height of Vietnam\, many Americans were using their choice of music to express their stance on the conflict in southeast Asia. “We wanted to break that mold\,” said Benson. “We were concerned more with this amazing roots music\, which we felt was being lost amid the politics. We were too country for the rock folks and we were too long-haired for the country folks. But everybody got over it once the music started playing.” \nA year later\, they were coaxed into moving to California by Commander Cody\, leader of Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen. But\, the band’s big break came when Van Morrison mentioned them in an interview with Rolling Stone “there’s some relatively unknown group around that I really dig. Asleep at the Wheel\, they play great country music.” Van Morrison Rolling Stone Interview (1973). The record offers started coming in and The Wheel got rolling. \nThe musicianship of Asleep at the Wheel has become the stuff of legends. Reuter’s pegged The Wheel as “one of the best live acts in the business.” Taking a page from Bob Wills’ book\, the band has constantly toured at a national level throughout its history; with anywhere from 7-15 of the finest players Ray Benson could talk into jumping in the bus to play a string of dates. The alumni roster is well over 80+ members\, and includes an impressive list of musicians who have gone on to perform with artists such as Bob Dylan\, George Strait\, Van Morrison\, Lyle Lovett\, Ryan Adams\, and many more. A quick scan of awards\, such as “Touring Band of the Year” (CMAs\, 1976) and “Lifetime Achievement in Performance” (Americana Music Awards 2009)\, not to mention near dominance of the GRAMMY “Country Instrumental” category over the years\, reflects the reputation of the band’s musicianship. Ray Benson fell in love with western swing because of its unique combination of elements of American blues\, swing and traditional fiddling but also for its demanding musical chops. Western swing is what Benson calls “jazz with a cowboy hat\,” is a thrill to hear live\, and thanks in large part to the Wheel’s 40+ years of promotion\, is a living and creative genre of music today. \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art Budweiser True Music's Southern Soul and Song Presents Chatham County Line and The Steel Wheels
DESCRIPTION:Our band is a lot like this place\,” says Chatham County Line guitarist\, lead singer and songwriter Dave Wilson. His eyes wander across the original hardwood lanes of the midcentury\nRaleigh bowling alley where he just finished rolling and drinking two rounds. Playing traditional string band instrumentation around a single microphone while clad in suits and ties visually\nprojects a similar sepiatoned timelessness. “We create a product that you’re familiar with and you’ll enjoy going back to because you know what to expect. My dad ran a local hardware store\nyears ago and I always felt like we shared that.” \nSure enough\, like a small town store\, there’s no dramatic tale or sexy hook to fuel the hype machine for Autumn\, the seventh studio album since the Raleigh\, NCbased Chatham County\nLine—Wilson\, John Teer (mandolin/fiddle)\, Chandler Holt (banjo)\, and Greg Readling (bass\, pedal steel\, piano)—coalesced in the late 1990’s. Instead\, the story behind the workmanlike\ngroup’s newest release—available September 2\, 2016 via Yep Roc Records—is simple: A veteran ensemble at the top of its game sticking to its considerable strengths—poignant\nsongwriting and inventive acoustic arrangements that draw upon a broad array of American roots influences\, highlighted by trademark three and fourpart harmonies that shine throughout.\nBut like the flatscreen televisions that now dot those bowling lanes\, the quartet respects its history—from bluegrass inventor Bill Monroe to innovators like John Hartford—while remaining\nmindful of more modern influences\, including its members’ backgrounds in rock bands.\n“Few groups have come as far in such a short period of time as The Steel Wheels…” – NPR’s Mountain Stage \n“What sets The Steel Wheels from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia apart from many bands is the combination of their stellar instrumentals\, accentuated by the one of a kind lead vocal of [Trent] Wagler\, and keenly supported by strong harmonies. Eric Brubaker on fiddle\, Jay Lapp on mandolin\, and Brian Dickel on bass weave in and out intricately throughout this record\, painting vivid imagery which flows effortlessly\, just teasing the lyrics enough to allow them to resonate within you.” – Country Standard Time \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art Budweiser True Music's Southern Soul and Song Presents Del McCoury and Friends (the Travelin’ McCourys\, the Gibson Brothers\, and Sierra Hull)
DESCRIPTION:The fifth decade of that half-century of music making has been filled with new and ongoing triumphs. The Del McCoury Band has shown unprecedented stability\, with but a single change in membership in fifteen years; their namesake earned membership in the cast of the legendary Grand Ole Opry in 2003\, and the Band earned their first Best Bluegrass Album Grammy award two years later; they traveled with the groundbreaking post-O Brother “Down From The Mountain” tour\, performed and recorded (on his Grammy-winning These Days) with Gill and with country star Dierks Bentley; they’ve made multiple appearances at the spectacular Bonnaroo Music Festival (and will appear there again in 2009) and launched an impressively popular annual New Year’s Eve show at the Ryman Auditorium\, where Del first appeared on the Opry with Bill Monroe some 46 years ago. Perhaps most importantly\, McCoury took an almost unprecedented step in 2003 when he took control of his own music by creating the McCoury Music label\, home to that Grammy-winning album along with a select set of releases by the Del McCoury Band\, country icon Merle Haggard and more. \n  \nThis is where a preternatural talent becomes a natural woman. \nThis is Sierra Hull’s Weighted Mind. It is nothing like what we thought it would be. It is nothing like what we’ve heard before\, from anyone. It is singular and emphatic\, harmonious and dissonant. It is the realization of promise\, and the affirmation of individuality. It is born of difficulty and indecision\, yet it rings with ease\, decisiveness\, and beauty. \n“She plays the mandolin with a degree of refined elegance and freedom that few have achieved\,” says Bela Fleck\, the genre-leaping banjo master who produced Weighted Mind. “And now her vocals and songwriting have matured to the level of her virtuosity.” \nAlison Krauss\, who has won more Grammy awards than any female artist in history\, says of Hull\, “I think she’s endless. I don’t see any boundaries. Talent like hers is so rare\, and I don’t think it stops. It’s round.” \nHull came to us as a bluegrass thrush\, a teen prodigy. Krauss called her to the Grand Ole Opry stage when Hull was 11-years-old. Two years later\, she signed with Rounder Records\, and soon became known as a remarkable mandolin player\, a tone-true vocalist\, and a recording artist of high order. She made two acclaimed albums. She played the White House\, and Carnegie Hall\, and the Kennedy Center\, and she became the first bluegrass musician to receive a Presidential Scholarship at the Berklee College of Music. \nShe was celebrated\, yet adrift.  Stranded\, even. \n  \nThe Gibson Brothers were voted 2013 Entertainers of the Year at the IBMA World of Bluegrass 24th Annual Awards Show in Raleigh\, N.C. for the second year in a row. We also won the Vocal Group of the Year\, Song of the Year (“They Called It Music”) and Eric was named the Songwriter of the Year. \nThe Gibson Brothers were named the 2012 Entertainer of the Year Award at the 23rd Annual IBMA Awards at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium\, the first time a brother duet has won this award. The same night we won the “Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year” award for “Singing As We Rise.” \nHelp My Brother\, our tenth album\, won the prestigious 2011 IBMA Album of the Year Award. We were named the 2011 IBMA Vocal Group of the Year\, the first time a brother duet has won this award.  Help My Brother held the #1 position on the Bluegrass Unlimited Album chart for 8 months. It definitely had staying power\,  with songs charting on the BU Top 30 more than a year after its release. \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art Budweiser True Music's Southern Soul and Song Presents Balsam Range
DESCRIPTION:Balsam Range is; Buddy Melton (fiddle\, lead and tenor vocals)\, Darren Nicholson (mandolin\, octave mandolin\, lead vocals\, baritone and low tenor vocals)\, Dr. Marc Pruett (banjo)\, Tim Surrett (bass\, dobro\, baritone and lead vocals)\, and Caleb Smith (guitar\, lead & baritone vocals). The five original members are all acoustic musicians and singers from western North Carolina. They thoughtfully and respectfully adopted the name of a majestic range of mountains that surround part of their home county of Haywood\, NC where the Great Smoky Mountains meet the Blue Ridge\, the Great Balsam Range. \nThe members of Balsam Range are extremely proud of their home of Haywood County\, NC and invite you all to come visit their beautiful part of the country! \nThe group’s ascent to the top of the Bluegrass world has left a well-marked trail of success since the band’s inception in 2007. One of the genre’s most award-winning artists in recent years\, they have garnered ten International Bluegrass Music Association Awards on the heels of six critically acclaimed albums. Balsam Range has left audiences spellbound while headlining major festivals from coast to coast\, selling out venues across the nation\, and appearing multiple times at the Grand Ole Opry. \nOn their newest release\, “Mountain Voodoo”\, the quintet cleverly captures traditional yet contemporary sounds. There are fiery instrumental parts alternating with deep heavy ballads\, overlaid by the vocal harmonies the group has become known for.  Debuting at number four\, “Mountain Voodoo” remained on the Billboard chart for nineteen weeks. Three singles from the album have reached the number one spot on the Bluegrass Today Charts including “Blue Collar Dreams” which spent 3 consecutive months at the number one spot. \n  \nPurchase Tickets
