SUMMARY:The Imperial Theatre Presents Cyber Theatre Summer Camp
DESCRIPTION:The Imperial Theatre is offering a unique opportunity for students\, ranging from rising 8th graders to high school and college students to learn the technical aspects of theatre during the  Cyber Summer Theatre Camp which will run from Monday\,  June 24th   thru Friday\, June 28th\, 2019. Attendees will learn about the use of computers\, electronic technology and web-based platforms that support the technical aspects of theatre and the interdisciplinary approach taken by the crew leaders and members to provide the highest level of service for performing arts organizations and promoters who rent the theatre for their productions\, as well as a magical and meaningful experience for their patrons. Each day of the class will focus on a particular aspect of theatre crafts including technical direction\, lighting\, audio/sound\, rigging\, box-office administration\, compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and a review of safety including automated fire systems.   Classes will take place in the Imperial Theatre from 9am to 1pm each day. The registration fee is$150.00 per student with scholarships available on a case-by-case basis for economically challenged students. Teachers are encouraged to apply for the scholarships on behalf of their student. \nThe Imperial Theatre  is a non-profit community theatre which serves as the “home” to the Colton Ballet\, the Augusta Players\, and the Morris Museum of Art’s “Southern Soul and Song” music series. The Columbia County Ballet has been performing in their holiday production of the “The Nutcracker” in the Imperial for years. \nWhile there are a variety of wonderful learning and training opportunities for students with an interest in performing arts\, whether it is theatrical\, dance forms or music\, there is little training available locally that includes a comprehensive overview of the various technical disciplines associated with stage craft.  The Cyber Summer Theatre Camp is intended to provide an overview for individuals interested in learning more about the technical aspects of theatre in the 21st Century.  Funding for this project comes from the Greater Augusta Arts Council re-grant of funds from Augusta\, Richmond County \n  \nClick HERE for Scholarship Application. \n  \nRegister Here\n

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art presents Southern Soul and Song Series The Earls of Leicester with Twisted Pine
DESCRIPTION:The Earls of Leicester \nBarry Bales (bass\, vocals) – Shawn Camp (guitar\, lead vocals) – Charlie Cushman (banjo\, guitars) – \nJerry Douglas (Dobro\, vocals) – Johnny Warren (fiddle\, bass vocals) – Jeff White (mandolin\, vocals) \nWhen the Earls of Leicester formed in 2013\, their mission was ambitious but exact: to preserve and promote the legacy of bluegrass legends Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs\, in hopes of reviving the duo’s music for longtime admirers and introducing a new generation to their genre-defining sound. Within a year of releasing their self-titled debut\, the Nashville-based six-piece far surpassed their own expectations\, winning a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album and earning six awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. \n  \nTwisted Pine \nPraised by NPR for their “upbeat\, poppy vibe; energetic\, driving rhythms” and “virtuosic solos\,” Twisted Pine has quickly become one of the most acclaimed young string bands in the Northeast. Steeped in traditional music\, these musicians are also fearless\, tuneful improvisers and passionate lovers of pop. While it’s easy to celebrate each of the band members individually\, Twisted Pine is more than a collection of talented musicians – it’s a unit that grooves together. Their intricate arrangements of swelling\, syncopated rhythm and precise instrumental interplay bring the enveloping sound and hooks of indie pop to an acoustic instrumental setting. That’s why the Boston Globe calls them “a wider version of stringband\, boundary jumpers akin to outfits like Punch Brothers\, Nickel Creek\, and Crooked Still.” \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art presents Southern Soul and Song Series Appalachian Road Show and Darrell Scott
DESCRIPTION:Appalachian Road Show \nBarry Abernathy was a founding member of the vocal and instrumental powerhouse band\, Mountain Heart. The group or its members have won or been nominated for multiple Grammys\, ACM\, CMA\, and IBMA Awards. Abernathy is also known for his contributions to both Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and IIIrd Tyme Out. The most unlikely thing about Barry’s story is his having been born with just a thumb and part of an index finger on his left hand. Still\, in addition to his truly great voice\, Abernathy plays a blistering banjo. Because of his hand\, he approaches the fingerboard from the top and does the fretting with his thumb and the end of his single-knuckled index finger. The Georgia-born Abernathy was named Banjo Player of the Year in 1997 by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA). \nDarrell Webb is a Grammy nominated session musician as well as an International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and SPBGMA award winner. The mandolin master with the soaring tenor previously headed up his own eponymous band and prior to that\, worked with some of the top acts in acoustic music\, Lonesome River Band\, J.D. Crowe & The New South\, Rhonda Vincent & The Rage\, was a founding member of the band Wildfire\, and Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper and has appeared on two different albums with Female Country Icon\, Dolly Parton. When you see or hear Darrell Webb perform you’ll know why he’s such a big part of the signature sound of Appalachian Roadshow. \nWith Appalachian Road Show\, Abernathy\, Webb and their talented all-star cast\, including grammy nominated fiddle beast\, Jim VanCleve\, and legendary bass player\, Todd Phillips (Bluegrass Album Band/ David Grisman Quintet/ Tony Rice Unit)  seek to honor the music\, traditions and history of the great Appalachian people and region. Additionally\, the group takes influences from other sources and applies that Appalachian style\, as they’ve done with their top-charting radio single\, a grassy version of the Steve Miller Band’s “Dance\, Dance\, Dance.” Which is currently the number 1 song in The Nation. \nAppalachian Roadshow’s self titled release is also currently the number one album in the nation and is receiving great success from promoters\, radio DJ’s and many fans throughout the US. To see more about Appalachian Roadshow visit: appalachianroadshow.com \n  \nDarrell Scott \n 2017 and 2018 Darrell opened for and performing with the Zac Brown Band\, these days find him roaming his Tennessee wilderness acreage hiking along the small river\, playing music\, or sharing each day with the woman he loves\, also an artist in her own right.   He often leads songwriting workshops to help people tell their own truths with their stories\, and is as busy as always writing\, producing\, performing\, and just plain fully immersing himself at the hips in life. \nIf one really opens their eyes and sees how incomparably varied in surreal depth and breadth the musical territory he is both delving into and setting the high water mark with\,  it leaves the rest in a bewildered wash of gravel road dust and fading taillights.  For good luck finding that two-legged soul who walks around among us who can keep up with him─aint gonna happen. \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Morris Museum of Art presents Southern Soul and Song Series Blue Highway and The Seldom Scene
DESCRIPTION:Blue Highway \nHighly esteemed bluegrass band Blue Highway has earned a collective 28 IBMA Awards\, 6 SPBGMA Awards\, one Dove Award\, plus three Grammy nominations as a band.  As momentum continues to build for the 25 year strong powerhouse band (2019 is their 25th year touring\, with 4 of the original members)\, Blue Highway is rolling on with a rich legacy\, carried on by three powerhouse songwriters and vocalists in Tim Stafford\, Wayne Taylor\, and Shawn Lane\, whose harmonies soar over the dynamic banjo of Jason Burleson and the tasteful dobro of Gary Hultman. \n\nBlue Highway’s 2016 album “Original Traditional”  was nominated for a 2017 GRAMMY Awardfor Best Bluegrass Album.\nBlue Highway was voted the Favorite Bluegrass Artist of All Timeby the readers of Bluegrass Today in April 2016.\nWayne Taylorwas a 2016 Inductee into the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame\, alongside legends like Patsy Cline\, the Statler Brothers\,  Jimmy Dean\, Mother Maybelle Carter\, and Roy Clark.  \nTim Staffordreceived honors as 2015 SPBGMA Guitar Player of the Year and 2014 and 2017 IBMA Songwriter of the Year.  Shawn Lane was nominated as 2015 IBMA Songwriter of the Year\, while past member Justin Moses was named IBMA’s Dobro Player of the year in 2017.\nBlue Highway charted the Most Radio Airplay of any Bluegrass Artistin 2014\, per the 2014 Bluegrass Radio Airplay Chart\, storming national airplay charts with their heralded album The Game.\nThe Game topped multiple charts at #1 including reigning at #1 for 7 consecutive months on the Bluegrass Unlimited Album Chart\, and was named the # 1 Bluegrass Album of the Year by critic Daniel Mullins in his end of the year Top 20 Albums of 2014 list in Bluegrass Today.\nThe2012 IBMA Vocal Group of the Year also sent the title track of The Game  to #1 on multiple charts including Bluegrass Todayand Roots Music Report\, as well as holding at #1 for three consecutive months on the national Bluegrass Unlimited Song Chart (Aug-Oct 2014).\n\nBlue Highway has been praised by peers\, fans\, and media alike\, with one of the most powerful descriptions of the Bluegrass super group being shared by Country Standard Time: \n“Wayne Taylor sings with the emotion of a man who escaped the coal mines and ain’t planning on going back. Tim Stafford continues to craft songs with depth .. The instrumentation is perfect. From the get go\, Jason Burleson opens with the unique style that defines Blue Highway banjo..  Shawn Lane exemplifies modern mandolin\, yet nods to the Monroe legacy. Three lead singers.. rich harmony .. songs of forgotten homeless veterans\, fallen heroes\, and heartbroken families. Blue Highway personifies modern acoustic music with respect for tradition. Highly recommended\, highly respected.” \n  \nThe Seldom Scene \nWhat does it take for a bluegrass band to remain popular for more than four decades? For The Seldom Scene\, it’s taken not only talented musicians\, a signature sound\, and a solid repertoire\, but also a sheer sense of fun. On April 22\, the longtime pillars of the bluegrass world returned with the aptly titled ‘Long Time… Seldom Scene\,’ via Smithsonian Folkways. The newly recorded collection features fresh interpretations of 16 oft-requested tunes and is the band’s first studio album since the GRAMMY-nominated album Scenechronized in 2007. It’s a family reunion in all the best ways\, featuring the current — and longest-running — lineup\, joined by founding members Tom Gray and John Starling and guests Chris Eldridge\, Emmylou Harris\, and Rickie Simpkins. \n‘Long Time’ is The Seldom Scene’s first-ever release with Smithsonian Folkways\, and captures the identity and playfulness that have endeared the group to audiences around the world for so long. “Hickory Wind” is a homesick ballad that features the vocals of longtime friend of the Scene\, Emmylou Harris\, who originally recorded the song on her ‘Blue Kentucky Girl’ album in 1980. Fan-favorite “Wait a Minute” is a fresh take of a song originally recorded for 1974’s Old Train album and includes founding member John Starling (vocals) and guests Rickie Simpkins (fiddle) and Chris Eldridge (guitar)\, son of founding member Ben Eldridge (banjo). The album was produced by three-time GRAMMY award-winning Smithsonian Folkways Sound Production Supervisor Pete Reiniger. \nListen to a two-song sneak preview of ‘Long Time… Seldom Scene’ here. \nWatch video of “Through the Bottom of the Glass” here. \nOver 40 years since they began playing together at weekly jam sessions in Ben Eldridge’s Bethesda\, Maryland basement\, The Seldom Scene have become one of the single greatest contributors to the progression of bluegrass while setting a new standard and attracting new audiences to the genre.  Their legendary weekly DC-area residencies included bluegrass versions of country music\, rock\, and even classical pop. The band’s popularity soon forced them to play more than once a week—but they continued to maintain their image as being seldom seen\, and on several of their early album covers were photographed with the stage lights on only their feet\, or with their backs to the camera. The Seldom Scene have performed at the White House many times\, and continue to tour year-round. \nThe Seldom Scene are Lou Reid (mandolin/vocals)\, Dudley Connell (guitar/vocals)\, Ronnie Simpkins (bass/vocals) Fred Travers (dobro/vocals) and Ron Stewart (banjo\, fiddle).  The last founding member\, Ben Eldridge\, retired in July of 2016 at a lovely retrospective of his career staged at the band’s home club\, The Birchmere\, surrounded by family and friends. \n  \nPurchase Tickets
